After watching “Pretty Woman” earlier I forgot how many of the lines I like, for comedy value, real life value or romantic value. So decided to compose a top 10 list of quotes from the movie. If you are a reader of my blog you should already know that I am a big fan of both Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. This was actually more difficult than I thought it would be, because yes I am that sad and love this movie so much.

10. Edward: “You and I are such similar creatures Vivian. We both screw people for money.”

A funny comparison came from Edward, showing that they are indeed more alike than you first think.

9. [At the beginning of the evening]
Vivian: “In case I forget to tell you later, I had a really good time tonight.”

I really thought this was so sweet, innocent but also rather amusing at the same time. As her feminine charm got her through, also showing that she was not used to actually going on proper dates.

8. Old Lady at Opera: “Did you like the opera, dear?”
Vivian: “It was so good, I almost peed my pants!”
Edward: “She said she liked it better than Pirates of Penzance.”

A totally hilarious moment of Edward managing to cover up what Vivian said.

Ooo how true this line proved to be!!!

This whole scene is just fantastic, in the bath tub singing along to Kiss by Prince unaware that Edward is watching her.

Vivian: “You just did.”

This line is really sad as it was when she decided to leave early after he offered to “put her up” somewhere and pretty much pay for her.

And then suddenly this knight… on a white horse with these colors flying would come charging up and draw his sword. And I would wave. And he would climb up the tower and rescue me. But never in all the time… that I had this dream did the knight say to me, “Come on, baby, I’ll put you up in a great condo.”

Just shows all little girls hope and want the same thing really.

This is just a brilliant moment between the two friends.

Doesnt everyone deep down really want the fairy tale ending? and hope it actually happens . . .

Best lines and best moment in the movie really as Vivian gets her own back on the rude shop assistant. With Pretty Woman playing in the background. Brilliant.

‘Tipsy’ Julia Roberts rolls out laughter riot at fundraiser

Julia Roberts reportedly drove the crowd at LAByrinth Theater’s Celebrity Charades fundraiser to tears with a laughter riot.

The actress allegedly hit the bottle before the beginning of the event, sponsored by Entertainment Weekly.

“She was drinking vodka and tonic beforehand, and was pretty tipsy by the time the event started,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

“None of her teammates could decipher any of her clues. She told the crowd that anyone who bid would get a kiss from her, which was OK because her husband [Danny Moder] was in the first row and the kids were at home.

“At one point, Sam Rockwell tried to carry her offstage, as he jokingly asked for ‘three bottles of water for Ms. Roberts’,” the source added.

Julia Fiona Roberts (born October 28, 1967) is an American actress. She became well known during the early 1990s after starring in the romantic comedy Pretty Woman opposite Richard Gere, which grossed $463 million worldwide. After receiving Academy Award nominations for Steel Magnolias in 1990 and Pretty Woman in 1991, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2001 for her performance in Erin Brockovich. Her films, which also include romantic comedies such as My Best Friend's Wedding, Mystic Pizza, Notting Hill, Runaway Bride, and crime films such as The Pelican Brief and Ocean's Eleven and Twelve have collectively brought box office receipts of over $2 billion, making her the most successful actress in terms of box office receipts.^[1]

Early life

Roberts was born in Atlanta, Georgia at Crawford Long Hospital, which is now Emory Hospital Midtown. Her father was Walter Roberts and her mother, Betty Lou Bredemus. Her parents, one-time actors and playwrights, met while performing theatrical productions for the armed forces and later co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in Atlanta, Georgia off Juniper Street in Midtown; Betty filed for divorce in 1971, with the divorce being finalized in early in 1972.^[5] Her mother later married Michael Motes and had another daughter, Nancy Motes who was born in 1976. Roberts' father died of cancer when she was ten. Her older brother, Eric Roberts, (from whom she was once estranged but reconciled since 2004) and sister, Lisa Roberts Gillan, are also actors.

While her mother was pregnant with Roberts, she and her husband ran an acting school for children in Decatur, Georgia. The children of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King attended the school. As a thank-you for their service, Mrs. King paid the hospital bill when Mrs. Roberts gave birth to Julia.

The Roberts family moved to Smyrna, Georgia (a suburb of Atlanta) in 1972, where she attended Fitzhugh Lee Elementary School, Griffin Middle School and Campbell High School.^[6] She played clarinet in the band. Roberts wanted to be a veterinarian as a child, but soon after graduating from Smyrna's Campbell High School,^[7] she headed to New York to join her brother and sister Lisa Roberts Gillan and pursue a career in acting. Once there, she signed with the Click modeling agency and enrolled in acting classes. She reverted to her original name "Julia Roberts" when she discovered that a "Julie Roberts" was already registered with the Screen Actors Guild. Career

1986–1989

Roberts made her film debut playing a supporting role with her brother, Eric, in Blood Red (she has just two words of dialogue), which, although filmed in 1987 was not released until 1989. Her first television appearance was as a juvenile rape victim in the initial season of the series Crime Story with Dennis Farina, in the episode titled "The Survivor", broadcast on February 13, 1987. She appeared on Sesame Street opposite the character Elmo, demonstrating her ability to change emotions. Roberts first caught the attention of moviegoers with her performance in the independent film Mystic Pizza in 1988; that same year, she had a role in the fourth season finale of Miami Vice. The following year, she was featured in Steel Magnolias as a young bride with diabetes and got her first Academy Award nomination (as Best Supporting Actress) for her performance.

1990–2000

Roberts became known to worldwide audiences when she co-starred with Richard Gere in the Cinderella/Pygmalionesque story Pretty Woman in 1990. Roberts won the role after the first two choices for the part, Molly Ringwald and Meg Ryan, both turned it down. The role also earned her a second Oscar nod, this time as Best Actress. Her next box office success was the thriller Sleeping with the Enemy, playing a battered wife who escapes her demented husband, Patrick Bergin, and begins a new life in Iowa. She played Tinkerbell in Steven Spielberg's Hook in 1991, and also played a nurse in the 1991 film Dying Young. This work was followed by a two-year hiatus, during which she made no films other than a cameo appearance in Robert Altman's The Player (1992). In early 1993, she was the subject of a People magazine cover story asking, "What Happened to Julia Roberts?"

In 1993, she co-starred with Denzel Washington in the successful The Pelican Brief, based on the John Grisham novel. She also starred alongside Liam Neeson in the 1996 film Michael Collins. In 1995 she appeared in season 2 of Friends (episode 13 "The one after the superbowl"). Over the next few years, she starred in a series of films that were critical and commercial failures, such as Stephen Frears' Mary Reilly (1996). Roberts overcame these failures with the commercial and critical success of My Best Friend's Wedding in 1997. She starred with Hugh Grant in the 1999 film Notting Hill. That same year, she also starred in Runaway Bride, her second film with Richard Gere. 2001–2005

In 2001, Roberts received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich, who helped wage a successful lawsuit against energy giant Pacific Gas & Electric. While presenting the Best Actor Award to Denzel Washington the following year, she made a gaffe, saying she was glad that Tom Conti wasn't there. She meant the conductor Bill Conti, who had tried to hasten the conclusion of her Oscar speech the previous year, but instead named the Scottish actor.^[8] Roberts would team up with Erin Brockovich director Steven Soderbergh for three more films: Ocean's Eleven (2001), Full Frontal (2002), and Ocean's Twelve (2004). Later in 2001, she starred in the road gangster comedy The Mexican giving her a chance to work with longtime friend Brad Pitt. In 2005, she was featured in the music video for the hit single "Dreamgirl" by the Dave Matthews Band.

2006–present

Roberts had two films released in 2006, The Ant Bully and Charlotte's Web. Both films were animated features for which she provided voice acting. Her next film was Charlie Wilson's War, with Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman, directed by Mike Nichols and based on the book by former CBS journalist George Crile; it was released on December 21, 2007. Fireflies in the Garden, also starring Ryan Reynolds and Willem Dafoe, was released at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2008.

Roberts made her Broadway debut on April 19, 2006 as Nan in a revival of Richard Greenberg's 1997 play Three Days of Rain opposite Bradley Cooper and Paul Rudd. Although the play grossed nearly US$1 million dollars in ticket sales during its first week^[9] and was a commercial success throughout its limited run, her performance drew criticism. New York Times' critic Ben Brantly described her as being fraught with "self-consciousness (especially in the first act) [and] only glancingly acquainted with the two characters she plays."^[10] Brantley also criticized the production of "Greenberg's slender, elegant play," writing that “it's almost impossible to discern its artistic virtues from this wooden and splintered interpretation, directed by Joe Mantello."^[10] Three Days of Rain received two Tony Award nominations in stage design categories. In 2009 Lancôme announced that Julia Roberts will become their global ambassador for their company.^[11]

American Girl films

Roberts has brought to life some of the books from American Girl as films, serving as executive producer alongside with her sister Lisa. The company's product lines and services are focused on pre-teen-girl characters from various periods of American history, embodied as dolls and featured in narratives including books and movies. Its flagship line is a collection of historical 18-inch dolls that have books and accessories.^{[citation needed]} Roberts has produced four movies.^[12]

Influence

Roberts's films have grossed over $2.3 billion at the American box office, making her the highest grossing female movie star.^[13] She was placed at the pinnacle of the Ulmer Scale, a comprehensive guide to the global star power of actors and directors in independent and studio films created by James Ulmer, ahead of such other luminaries as Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks.

Roberts's personal life has often been in the spotlight. She has had widely reported romantic relationships with numerous famous men, including Liam Neeson, Dylan McDermott, Kiefer Sutherland, Lyle Lovett, Matthew Perry, and Benjamin Bratt. She was briefly engaged to McDermott, her Steel Magnolias co-star. She met Sutherland in 1990, when he was her co-star in Flatliners. In August 1990, Roberts and Sutherland announced their engagement, with an elaborate studio-planned wedding scheduled for June 14, 1991. Roberts broke the engagement three days before the wedding. Roberts subsequently went to Ireland with Jason Patric, a friend of Sutherland's. On June 27, 1993, she married country singer Lyle Lovett. The wedding took place at St. James Lutheran Church in Marion, Indiana, near where Lovett was appearing on tour with his band. In March 1995, the couple separated, and subsequently divorced.

In 1998, Roberts began dating Law & Order star Benjamin Bratt, and he was her escort for the March 25, 2001 Academy Awards ceremony at which she won her Oscar. Three months later, in June 2001, Roberts and Bratt announced that they were no longer a couple. "It's come to a kind and tenderhearted end," she said of their relationship.^[14]

Roberts met her current husband, cameraman Daniel Moder, on the set of her movie The Mexican in 2000. At the time, Moder was married to Vera Steimberg Moder. He filed for divorce a little over a year later, and after it was finalized, he and Roberts wed on July 4, 2002, at her ranch in Taos, New Mexico.^[15] On November 28, 2004, they became the parents of fraternal twins, daughter Hazel Patricia and son Phinnaeus "Finn" Walter. Charities

Roberts has given her time and resources to UNICEF as well as to other charitable organizations. In Spring 1995, Roberts, an enthusiastic supporter of UNICEF, asked if she could meet some of the relief agency's neediest recipients. On May 10, she arrived in Port-au-Prince, as she said, "to educate myself".^{[citation needed]} The poverty she found was overwhelming. "My heart is just bursting", she said.^{[citation needed]} UNICEF officials hoped that her six-day visit would trigger an outburst of giving: $10 million in aid was sought at the time.^{[citation needed]}

In 2000, Roberts narrated Silent Angels, a documentary about Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder, which was shot in Los Angeles, Baltimore and New York. The documentary was designed to help raise public awareness about the disease. In July 2006, Earth Biofuels announced Roberts as a spokeswoman for the company and as chair of the company's newly formed Advisory Board promoting the use of renewable fuels.

Pretty Woman is a 1990 romantic comedy film. The film centers on down-on-her-luck prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) who is hired by a wealthy businessman and corporate raider, Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) to be his escort for several business functions, and their developing relationship.

Pretty Woman was initially intended to be a dark drama about prostitution in New York but was reconceptualized into a romantic comedy. The film was a critical success and became one of 1990's highest grossing films, and today is one of the most financially successful entries in the romantic comedy genre, with an estimated gross of $464 million USD.^[1] Roberts received a Golden Globe Award for her role, and was nominated for an Academy Award in her first blockbuster hit which brought her worldwide acclaim. Screenwriter J. F. Lawton was nominated for a Writers Guild Award and a BAFTA Award. The film was followed by a string of similar romantic comedies, including Runaway Bride, which teamed up Gere and Roberts under the direction of Garry Marshall once again. It is also notable as being Ralph Bellamy's final film before his death in 1991.

Plot

Corporate raider Edward Lewis (Gere) is having trouble driving his borrowed Lotus Espirit and stops for directions on Hollywood Boulevard. Vivian Ward (Roberts), a hooker, walks over to his car. Edward agrees to pay her for directions, but Vivian jumps in the car and offers to show him. On the way to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Vivian comments on his bad driving. Much to her delight, Edward asks her to drive. Vivian says she will return to her corner by taxi. When Edward sees her waiting at a bus stop, he offers to hire her for the night. Edward explains his business to her, in which he buys large companies, breaks them up and sells them for profit. When he was a boy, his father divorced his mother to be with another woman, and emptied his wife's bank account. Consequently, his mother died poor, and Edward grew up bitter.

The next day, Edward's lawyer Philip Stuckey (Jason Alexander) calls Edward and tells him businessman James Morse and his grandson David wish to meet with him to discuss Edward's plans to buy their business. Edward decides to bring a date in order to keep the meeting social, and hires Vivian to spend the week with him, offering to pay her $3,000. He gives money for a dinner dress, but when she attempts to shop on Rodeo Drive, the saleswomen snub her. Vivian returns to the hotel distraught; Barnard (Elizondo), the manager of the hotel at first doesn't hide his disdain for Vivian. He tells her that her presence is only tolerated because of Edward's standing at the hotel. He does ask her to dress more appropriately, but when Vivian tearfully explains the episode at the store where she was turned away, he befriends her and directs her to a store where they help her buy a beautiful cocktail dress. He also gives her a lesson (at her request) in table manners, so that she will not be intimidated at dinner. That night, Vivian and Edward meet James and David Morse. During the meal, Vivian brings out the enlightened gentleman in the elderly Morse, but the business discussion with Edward grows cold. The Morses express their anger over Edward's impending takeover and walk out.

The next morning, Edward tells Vivian to buy some more clothes for some upcoming events. Vivian reveals to Edward the episode the previous day where the saleswomen wouldn't help her. This time, Edward accompanies her for the first part of a shopping spree. Vivian ends her day by returning to the store from where its sales staff was rude to her to tell them what a huge mistake they made in not helping her. Vivian and Edward's business relationship quickly develops into friendship, and Edward and Vivian go on several dates and spend several evenings trading deep emotional insights. Edward learns that Vivian only chose her profession because she couldn't make the rent otherwise, and was too ashamed to go home. Vivian finds herself falling in love with Edward.

Edward and Vivian attend a corporate polo match, where Vivian meets Phil, who pesters Edward until he reveals that Vivian is actually a prostitute after he sees Vivian and the younger Morse getting along. He only tells Phil that out of spite and Phil approaches Vivian and crudely propositions her. She is hurt by Edward's betrayal. When she gets back to the penthouse she announces she is leaving, but ignores Edward's money. When Edward sees this, he apologizes. Vivian decides to stay. An idyllic few days ensue, during which Edward flies her by private jet to San Francisco to see La Traviata. After the opera Vivian wakes Edward with a kiss, symbolic of the change in their relationship (she never kisses her clients).

As the week starts to end and Edward prepares to return to New York, Edward tells Vivian he wants to see her again and offers to supply her with everything she needs. Vivian refuses and says she wants the whole thing—commitment, or nothing. Edward claims that he's never treated her like a prostitute before he leaves for the day. As the time draws near for Edward to finalize his buyout of Morse Industries, his relationship with Vivian is beginning to show its effects: he loses his bitter lust for vengeance against his father. Respecting James Morse's caring nature, he tells the older man he has another solution for his company instead. Amazed at Edward's change in attitude, Morse genuinely tells him he's proud of him.

Phil is upset to hear that the buyout has been stalled and goes to Edward's hotel to confront him. He finds Vivian alone, and after blaming her for Edward's behavior, attempts to rape her. Edward arrives and a fight ensues, after which Edward orders Phil to leave and breaks off their business relationship and friendship. Vivian and Edward talk, and Vivian states she wants "the fairy tale." Edward says he can`t offer that. He asks Vivian to stay the night but she declines. The next day, Edward checks out. Barnard notices his pensiveness and remarks how difficult it must be to give up something so beautiful, supposedly referring to the diamond necklace. Edward asks Darryl to drive him to Vivian's apartment in a white limousine; he arrives as Vivian is packing to move to San Francisco. Although nervous, Edward controls his fear of heights and climbs the fire escape to Vivian's apartment. Vivian meets him on the landing, and he asks what happens in her fantasy after the knight on the white horse rescues her. She tells him that she "rescues him right back".
